Garages, workshops and attics are where many homes run out of electrical capacity first. A single overhead bulb, one or two outlets on a shared circuit and no 240V power were enough when the garage just held a car. Today it may hold an EV charger, a second refrigerator or freezer, a home gym, power tools and a workbench. ASL Electric upgrades garage, workshop and attic electrical across Orange County, with bright lighting, plenty of outlets and the circuits to run it all.
We install LED shop lighting, add outlets along walls and over workbenches, run dedicated 120V and 240V circuits for tools and appliances, install subpanels when the main panel is far away or full, and wire attics for lighting and storage. Every circuit is sized from a load calculation and protected with GFCI where the code requires it.
Garage, workshop and attic electrical
⚡LED shop lighting
Bright, efficient LED fixtures that light the whole garage evenly, on switches at each door, with optional motion control.
⚡Outlets and workbench power
GFCI-protected outlets along walls and over workbenches, at heights that make sense for tools and chargers.
⚡240V circuits for tools
Circuits for table saws, compressors, welders, kilns and other equipment, sized to the tool's specifications.
⚡Subpanels
A subpanel in the garage or workshop adds circuit space where you need it and makes adding future circuits easy.
⚡Freezer, refrigerator and gym circuits
Dedicated circuits for garage refrigerators, freezers and fitness equipment so they do not trip with other loads.
⚡Attic lighting and outlets
Switched attic lighting and outlets for storage areas and equipment access, installed safely.
Signs your garage needs electrical upgrades
Upgrade your garage electrical if:
- One bulb lights the whole garage
- Breakers trip when you run a tool and the freezer
- You use extension cords to reach the workbench
- Your tools need 240V power
- You are adding an EV charger
- You want a home gym or workshop
- The attic has no light for storage access
- Garage outlets are not GFCI protected
Why garage circuits need planning
Garages see some of the heaviest and most variable loads in a home: motors starting, compressors cycling, heaters and chargers running for hours. Shared circuits and long extension cords lead to tripped breakers, overheated cords and frustration. Planned circuits, sized for each use and protected properly, make the garage safer and actually useful.
How we upgrade a garage
Plan the space
We talk through how you use the garage today and plan to use it, including vehicles, tools, appliances and storage, and lay out lighting and outlets.
Load calculation
We confirm panel capacity and recommend a subpanel or service upgrade if the new loads require it.
Install and protect
We install lighting, outlets and circuits with GFCI protection where required, and secure exposed wiring in conduit.
Label and test
We label new circuits and test every outlet, light and tool circuit.
Garage upgrade options
Lighting refresh
Replace old fixtures with bright LED shop lighting on proper switches.
Outlets and circuits
Add GFCI outlets and dedicated circuits for appliances and tools.
Workshop package
Lighting, workbench outlets, 240V tool circuits and a subpanel.
EV-ready garage
Plan an EV charger circuit alongside lighting and outlets.
Lighting a garage properly
Good garage lighting comes from several fixtures spread across the ceiling, not one bright fixture in the middle. Linear LED shop lights or LED panels give even light without shadows around the car and over workbenches. A neutral to cool white color temperature helps when you are working on projects.
Switches at each entry door, and optional motion sensors, mean you never walk into a dark garage with your hands full.
Planning for an EV and future needs
If you have an EV or plan to buy one, plan the charger circuit with the rest of the garage upgrade. A subpanel in the garage can make it easy to add an EV charger, tool circuits and future equipment without running long circuits back to the main panel every time.
We size the subpanel and feeder from a load calculation so the main service is not overloaded, and recommend a panel upgrade or load management where needed.
Garage refrigerators, freezers and GFCI
Garage outlets must be GFCI protected, which includes the outlet your garage refrigerator or freezer plugs into. A quality GFCI on a dedicated circuit rarely trips without a real fault, and if it does, it is telling you something: moisture, a failing appliance or a wiring problem.
Putting the refrigerator or freezer on its own dedicated circuit keeps it from sharing with power tools and heaters, which is the most common cause of nuisance tripping. We also recommend checking a garage freezer periodically, so a tripped device never goes unnoticed for long.
Planning a garage workshop
A workshop needs more than a few extra outlets. Think about which tools run at the same time, which need 240 volts, where benches and stationary tools will sit, and how much light you need at the work surface. Outlets along the bench at a comfortable height, a separate circuit for the dust collector or compressor, and bright, even overhead lighting make a workshop safer and more pleasant to use.
We start with your tool list and layout, check the panel's capacity, and recommend whether new circuits from the main panel or a garage subpanel is the better approach. If an EV charger is also in the plans, we design for both at once so the garage does not have to be rewired twice.
What affects the cost of garage electrical
The main factors are the number of lights and outlets, dedicated and 240V circuits, distance to the main panel, whether a subpanel or service upgrade is needed, finished or open walls, and permit requirements. We provide a free estimate after seeing your garage and panel.

Garage, Workshop & Attic Electrical across Orange County
Garage upgrades are popular across Orange County, especially in established neighborhoods of Tustin, Huntington Beach, Irvine and Lake Forest, where garages were built with minimal lighting and one or two outlets. One Tustin customer, after moving into an older home, realized how much the garage needed to change, and we upgraded it.
In inland communities like Rancho Santa Margarita, garages often double as workshops and gyms, and attics are used for storage that needs safe lighting. We plan each upgrade so you have the power you need today and room for an EV charger tomorrow.
