Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Orange County, CA

Dead outlets, tripping breakers, flickering lights and burning smells, diagnosed and fixed right.

★ 4.9 from 720 Google reviews CSLB #1048262 licensed, bonded & insured 24/7 emergency line

When an outlet goes dead, a breaker keeps tripping or the lights flicker every time the air conditioner kicks on, you need more than a quick guess. You need a licensed electrician who finds the real cause, fixes it safely and tells you honestly what else, if anything, needs attention. That is what ASL Electric has done for Orange County homes and businesses since 2002, and no job is too big or too small.

Our electricians troubleshoot and repair everything from a single GFCI outlet to a failing panel, aluminum branch wiring and circuits that have been overloaded for years. We carry the testing equipment to trace a fault to its source instead of replacing parts until the problem goes away, and we quote the repair upfront before any work begins. Troubleshooting and repair live together here because one is pointless without the other: a fix that does not address the cause is just a delay.

Electrical problems we diagnose and repair

⚡Breakers that keep tripping

A breaker that trips is doing its job, so the question is why. It may be an overloaded circuit, a short in a device or cord, a ground fault, or an AFCI breaker reacting to arcing or to electronics on the circuit. We test the circuit under load and fix the cause rather than swapping in a bigger breaker, which is never the safe answer.

⚡Dead outlets and switches

When part of a room stops working, the culprit is often a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose backstabbed connection or a failed device. Loose connections create heat, so we open the boxes, find the failed splice and make it right with proper terminations.

⚡Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that dim when a large appliance starts can point to a loose neutral, an undersized circuit or a problem at the service. Flicker on one fixture may be a bad lamp holder or dimmer. We separate the harmless causes from the dangerous ones, which can include a failing connection at the panel or meter.

⚡Burning smells, buzzing and warm faceplates

Heat and odor mean something is arcing or overheating. Turn off the circuit if you can do so safely and call us. These are the calls our 24/7 emergency line exists for, and we treat them as urgent.

⚡GFCI and AFCI problems

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas and outdoor outlets need GFCI protection, and newer bedrooms and living areas need AFCI protection. We repair and replace these devices, and track down nuisance tripping so the protection stays in place.

⚡Partial power loss

Half the house dark while the other half works usually means a problem on one leg of the service, a failing main breaker or a utility side issue. We test at the panel and the meter, repair what is ours to repair and coordinate with SCE or SDG&E when the fault is on their side.

Warning signs you should not ignore

Some electrical problems are an annoyance. Others are an early warning. Call a licensed electrician if you notice any of these:

  • A breaker that trips again right after you reset it
  • Outlets or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
  • A burning plastic smell or brown marks around an outlet
  • Buzzing or crackling from a switch, outlet or the panel
  • Lights that dim or flicker when appliances start
  • Sparks when you plug something in
  • Outlets that no longer hold a plug firmly
  • Two-prong outlets in rooms where you use computers or appliances
  • A panel that is hot, rusted or has scorch marks
  • Mild shocks from appliances, faucets or fixtures

Why electrical problems should be fixed now

Electrical faults rarely fix themselves. A loose connection that causes an occasional flicker today can keep heating until the insulation breaks down, and a breaker that is constantly reset can hide an overloaded circuit until it fails. Most of the repairs we make are small when they are caught early: a new device, a proper splice, a correctly sized circuit. Waiting is what turns them into damaged wiring, a melted panel bus or an emergency call at night.

How we troubleshoot, without guessing

Listen first

We start by asking what you have noticed and when. A breaker that trips only when the microwave and toaster run together tells a different story than one that trips at random overnight.

Test, then open

Using meters, circuit tracers and load testing, we narrow the fault to a circuit and then to a box before we open walls or replace anything. That keeps repairs small and avoids paying for parts you did not need.

Fix the cause and the connection

We repair failed devices, replace backstabbed connections with proper terminations, correct overloaded circuits and replace damaged wiring. On homes with aluminum branch wiring we use approved connection methods, not standard twist-on wire nuts.

Verify and explain

Before we leave, we test the repaired circuit under load and walk you through what we found, what we fixed and anything we recommend you keep an eye on. You get the honest picture, not a sales pitch.

Repair, upgrade or replace: what makes sense

Repair the device or connection

Most calls end here. A failed outlet, switch, GFCI or splice is replaced and the circuit is tested. Fast, affordable and permanent when the rest of the system is sound.

Add or split a circuit

If a circuit trips because it carries too much, the fix is a new dedicated circuit for the heavy load, such as a microwave, space heater, freezer or workshop tool, not a larger breaker.

Upgrade the protection

Adding GFCI or AFCI protection or replacing a worn breaker brings an older circuit closer to current code and makes it safer without a major project.

Replace the panel or rewire

When repairs keep pointing back to a failing panel, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, or deteriorating original wiring, a planned panel upgrade or rewire costs less over time than repeated service calls.

“He quickly diagnosed that builder had improperly secured the electrical wiring inside of the outlet causing arching and finally a complete meltdown. New outlet is in place. Dishwasher and garbage disposal back up and running.”

What affects the cost of an electrical repair

Every repair is priced after we see the problem, and you get the price before work begins. The main factors are how long it takes to locate the fault, whether the wiring is accessible or inside finished walls and ceilings, the parts involved (a standard outlet versus a GFCI, AFCI or panel breaker), whether the repair needs a permit, and whether the visit is scheduled or an after-hours emergency. Estimates are free, and we offer senior and military discounts.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting across Orange County

Orange County homes span every era, and each has its own repair patterns. Late 1960s and 1970s tracts in Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, the El Toro area of Lake Forest and the early villages of Irvine may still have original panels, two-prong outlets or aluminum branch wiring. Homes from the 1980s and 1990s in Aliso Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita often need GFCI updates and added circuits for modern kitchens. Even new homes in Ladera Ranch and Rancho Mission Viejo see AFCI nuisance tripping and builder connection problems.

Because our shop is in Lake Forest, we reach most of South and Central Orange County quickly, and our crews know the housing they are walking into. Customers have called us for everything from an Irvine rental that lost power on half the house to a Lake Forest home office circuit with an AFCI breaker that kept tripping, and we found and fixed the cause each time.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting FAQs

Why does my breaker keep tripping?+
The most common causes are an overloaded circuit, a short in an appliance or cord, a ground fault, or an AFCI breaker detecting arcing. Resetting it repeatedly can hide a real problem. We test the circuit to find the cause and fix it, often by moving a heavy load to its own dedicated circuit.
Is a warm outlet or switch dangerous?+
A faceplate that feels warm, smells hot or shows discoloration usually means a loose or overloaded connection that is generating heat. Stop using it, turn off the breaker if you safely can, and have it inspected promptly.
Do you handle electrical emergencies at night and on weekends?+
Yes. Our office hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 6 PM, and our emergency dispatch line is answered 24/7. For urgent calls across Orange County we typically arrive in about 90 minutes.
Can you repair aluminum wiring?+
Yes. Homes wired with aluminum, mostly from the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, need connections made with approved methods. We repair failing connections and can quote a full repair or rewire. See our aluminum wiring repair page for details.
Do you charge for estimates?+
No. We provide free onsite estimates with upfront pricing, so you approve the price before any work begins.
Do I need a permit for an electrical repair?+
Like-for-like repairs such as replacing a failed outlet or switch generally do not. New circuits, panel work and larger alterations usually do. We tell you upfront and pull the permit when one is required.
