When the power fails or smoke fills a hallway, illuminated exit signs and emergency lights are what guide people out of a building. They are required by the California Building and Fire Codes in commercial buildings, and they are checked by fire marshals and building inspectors. ASL Electric installs, replaces, repairs and upgrades exit signs and emergency lighting for businesses, offices, retail, restaurants, warehouses and multifamily buildings across Orange County.
We help you choose the right fixtures, install them at the correct locations and heights, connect them to the right circuits with battery backup, and replace failed signs and batteries that would not pass an inspection. From a single failed sign to a full building upgrade to LED, we make sure the means of egress is lit, marked and ready when it matters.

Signs your exit and emergency lighting needs attention
Call us if any of these apply to your building:
- An exit sign is dark, dim or flickering
- Emergency lights do not come on when you press test
- Battery backup does not last during a test
- A fire inspection noted exit or emergency lighting
- Old incandescent or fluorescent exit signs
- A new layout or tenant improvement changed the exits
- Signs are blocked by walls, shelving or decor
- Hallways or stairs go dark during a power outage
Why exit and emergency lighting cannot wait
Exit signs and emergency lights only matter in an emergency, which is exactly why failures go unnoticed until an inspection or an outage. A dark exit sign or a dead emergency battery can mean a failed fire inspection, a correction notice, and in a real emergency, people who cannot find their way out. Keeping these fixtures working is a basic responsibility for any building owner or manager, and it is quick, affordable work when done proactively.

We install fixtures at the right locations and heights, connect them to the proper unswitched circuit, and confirm the battery backup works.
Test and document
We test every fixture on battery, replace failed units and give you a clear summary of what was done for your records and your inspector.
Exit and emergency lighting options
LED exit sign
Low energy, long life and battery backup: the standard for most commercial spaces.
Combination exit and emergency light
A sign with built-in emergency lamps, saving fixtures where the layout allows.
Separate emergency lighting units
Dedicated battery-backed lights for corridors, stairs and larger open areas.
Self-diagnostic fixtures
Fixtures that test themselves and flag problems, reducing manual testing work.
What California code expects
In commercial buildings, exits and the path to them must be marked with exit signs that remain illuminated, and the path of egress must be lit, including when normal power fails, typically using battery backup or another emergency power source for a required minimum duration. Signs must be visible from the path of travel and not blocked by doors, decorations or shelving.
Requirements depend on the occupancy type, the size of the space and the layout, and they are enforced by your local fire authority and building department. We install to the current California codes and work with your inspector's notes when corrections are needed.
Testing and maintenance
Exit signs and emergency lights should be tested regularly using the push-to-test button, and batteries should be checked for their full duration on a schedule. Batteries in these fixtures wear out over time, and a sign that lights up on normal power may still fail when power is lost.
We can test your building's fixtures, replace batteries and failed units, and upgrade old fixtures to LED models with self-diagnostics that make ongoing checks easier for your maintenance team.
What affects the cost of exit and emergency lighting
Cost depends on the number and type of fixtures, whether existing wiring and circuits can be used or new circuits are needed, ceiling height and access, whether the work is part of a tenant improvement with permits and inspections, and whether we are replacing batteries in existing units or installing new fixtures. We provide a free estimate after surveying your building.

Exit Sign & Emergency Lighting across Orange County
We install and maintain exit signs and emergency lighting for commercial spaces across Orange County, from offices and medical suites in Irvine's business districts to retail, restaurants and light industrial spaces in Lake Forest, Costa Mesa and Tustin. Multifamily buildings and HOAs also have exit and emergency lighting in corridors, stairwells and common areas that needs regular attention.
Whether you are preparing for a fire inspection, responding to a correction notice or building out a new tenant space, we install to code, test on battery and leave you with fixtures that will work when they are needed.
Many of the buildings we service were built or last remodeled decades ago, when exit signs used incandescent lamps and emergency lights relied on large sealed batteries. Upgrading those fixtures to LED models with self-testing reduces energy use and maintenance, and makes it far easier for building staff to confirm that every sign and light will work during an outage.
